Vagabond in a Van

I was just in my backyard, enjoying the magnificense of 10,000 acres and no people.
Not listening tothe pope in a crowded room, or watching other men's lips move in the idiot box or in the shadows above a beer can. How do I come by this good fortune?
My trusty steed, Betelgeuse.My trash for the week, and mi sombrero.The scenery, the shocks. Sometimes I wonder what it means to own something, like this van that was given to me, from my parents and society and the earth, and will return to them, or my jacket, that I found and that could be taken or lost or destroyed at any time. Or this cool spot where the yellow flowers bloom in the abandoned ceremonial pits while the sky stretches over an immense landscape laid open bellow me to the horizon in every direction. Or the entire system of public lands that is our birthright and our trust.The Southwest is so beautiful...I had to start exploring it.I am a Forest Guardian, I speak for the trees. I am the embodiment of a Lifestyle Organization. Older people give younger people the money they need in order to live the lifestyle "to which they would like to become accustomed". These older people buy, with their tax deductible contribution, an entire world more to their taste and liking. They are not buying a place in heaven. It is a firmly grounded and embodied reality. A place on earth, or rather a whole landscape of places: acreages and access. They buy better Quality of Life (QoL) The product delivered is both short term, specific, and long term, diffuse. It is the way health care should be: both preventative and curative. A positive vision of health. So the more the lifestyle of the younger confirms the choices of the older, the more successful the business. Isn't that how all business operates?Migratory and BedouinFollowing the changing seasons, subsisting off the land. Local wine and buffalo. Thoreau said simplify, simplify, so I don't bother heating my food: saves on energy and cleaning dishes. Every day there is a new view out the window. Can you feel the language slipping away? There is no written culture on the Prairie.
Constant movement, movement as a morality.

Jobsite Santa Fe River at San Ysidro Crossing

Aqua Fria park is on a well-chosen site on a hill at the edge of town, the (dry) Santa Fe river flows along one edge. The park is also dry in both the literal and metaphorical sense. There is not a lot of creative energy here, besides the wind. It could be beautiful, but it is deserted, devoid of people and trees.

Could a cottonwood bosque bloom here? Our site is bordered on the north (upstream) by San Ysidro road and on the south by Caja del Oro Grant road. Between these two overpasses the Santa Fe is "natural".
In this case "natural" means "hammered shitless". You know when you've been beat so hard you can't even shit afterward? That's shitless. The "river" has been farmed and irrigated away, grazed to stubble and weeds, mined for gravel and concrete powder, littered and poisoned and polluted with septic runoff. The "river" is now dry, as many in the Southwest are.
So they called in the stream team, in collaboration again with Bill Zedyk and Steve Carson.
Zedyk and Carson had installed post or rock vanes and we worked to further stabilized these erosion control structures with plantings.
The riverbed/floodplane is too wide and continues to erode its banks, so most of the work is focused on narrowing and stabilizing, as opposed to inducing meanders.

Jobsite Santa Fe River: Successful Restorat

Some have become beaver lunch.
Other have become part of a beaver's dam (note overflow waterfal)l.

Dams create lakes.
And wetlands. Note the beaver trail.

Wetlands create the right conditions for new trees to grow, completing a sustainable cycle.

Bugs

Just one of Dr. Hildebrand's achievements showed that the insect olfactory system is organized the same as man's --with intriguing differences. But it must be analogy, not homology -- the last common ancestor was practically single-celled with no real nervous system to speak of. This is all the more surprising when you consider that most of the work coming out of contemporary neuroscience highlights the contingent nature of neural processing -- seeing the mind as a very biological entity rather than logically put together in correspondence with fundamental physical constraints. A good example is that you also can't train animals to get a reward by moving away from a stimulus that predicts reward. Pavlovian conditioning trumps Skinnerian.


But many neuroecology insect olfaction experiments are Behavioralist in their treatment of insects as automatons. Any variation is "noise". But aren't bugs sometimes curious about an odor, sometimes another? Why does this fly stay smelling my socks for exactly 4 seconds and the banana peel for exactly 7 seconds? Can you explain every wingbeat?

Jaunt up Portillo Mesa with Botany Quotes

I turn the pages of a mental index to plants and try to remember which are the ones to distinguish these borders: which plants separate at a glance mesic from hydric, hydric from xeric? I do not remember. Such generalities, in any case, would only founder on the particulars at my feet. One is better off with a precise and local knowledge, and a wariness of borders. These small habitats, like the larger landscapes, merge imperceptibly with each other. Pauline says her work is not simply an application of her knowledge as a botanist. It is not a prescribing of the known. Rather, it is exploration of the microscopically complex world we do not know and a realization that some of it is not knowable.
"This is a search for the unknown, and the unknown forms the model from which we work," she says. "We as a species are lessened by the loss of unknown places."

We drove all that day on straight gravel roads set in a grid across each other every mile and finally stopped to lok at one of those. Pauline showed me where a bank had been cut and the roadbed built up, forever altering the soil profile below. The soil manifests itself as plants. The refuge will close these roads and bulldoze them back to something resembling the natural contour, but bulldozers cannot re-create the soil profile, and so for the ages, the plants above these buried roads will be different. The soil below will always contain different minerals in different layers, percolate water differently, and the plants will express all of this. Pauline believes the difference in plants may be visible even from aircraft. Someday one may fly above this refuge and still see the Jeffersonian grid sticking through the grass like the bones off a great buried beast.
In that the plants tell the history of a place, I'm not sure I would have it otherwise. One cannot cheat the land's library of its information.

In some real ways, the effort to re-find the landscape, which is the same as the effort to re-attach our lives to the land, is a religious quest, and it makes sense to consider it that way. Western literate culture, with its respect for authority, needed a creator and pursued one, eventually separate from the creation. This separation excused all manners of destruction.

Yet the creation remains, and some of us creatures need to find it. The creator and creation are the same and the unity is evolution. A place possesses a certain set of circumstances, weather, soil, and community, that lead to a certain manifestation of life in a place. Undeniably, the creation evolved certain parts of life to inhabit certain places, to show the nature of a place. [really, you have to look at lichen to know the primary movers]
Certain cultural traditions took great pains to divine the intentions of the creation. They used shamans, who were not so much magicians or priests or herbalists or storytellers as they were seers, those who would travel beyond the veil to read the verities, to divine the creation's intentions. They saw and heard the mysteries that were just beyond every one else's ken.

...I imagine that must be what it is like sometimes to be a botanist. I have been afield with many of them, and they are different, almost invariably quiet, distant. Undeniably, they see something different from what I see, as if the knowledge of the plants lifts a veil. The whole of it is there in the plants to be read, the full soul of a place, its life and the abuses of its life, the creation's intentions and the manifest violations of those intentions. Botanists are our shamans. "

Soil Horizons and Taxonomies

"Soils tend to have distinct variations in color both horizontally and vertically. The coloring of soils occurs because of a variety of factors. Soils of the humid tropics are generally red or yellow because of the oxidation of iron or aluminum, respectively. In the temperate grasslands, large additions of humus cause soils to be black. The heavy leaching of iron causes coniferous forest soils to be gray. High water tables in soils cause the reduction of iron, and these soils tend to have greenish and gray-blue hues. Organic matter colors the soil black. The combination of iron oxides and organic content gives many soil types a brown color. Other coloring materials sometimes present include white calcium carbonate, black manganese oxides, and black carbon compounds."

Colorado Natural Heritage Program

The Colorado Natural Heritage Project (CNHP) is the Human Genome Project (HGP) of Colorado's environment -- nobody's really cataloged all the different ecosystems - how they are composed and comprised, what separates (gradations or demarcations), how each responds to the "disturbing presence" of humans. Plus, it will help us save at least a little bit of every habitat and hence, hopefully, at least some of every species.

Of course, we already know what we'll find -- that there's not enough of the environment left to save all the species. We've already destroyed too much of some kinds of deserts and wetlands...its as if scientists, setting out on the HGP discovered that we'd already erased large parts of our own DNA. These environments are just as essential: we are a combination of nature and nurture, genes and environments. When we loose an entire class of environment, we loose that potential self expression as surely as if we lost a segment of our DNA.

Also, GIS mapping speaks to a larger audience, including management professionals. To quote Van Wagtendonk, Fire Ecology of the Sierra Nevada in The Wild Fire Reader (Wuerthner, ed) 2006

"The...[GIS] analysis was used extensively in the development of Yosemite National Park's current fire management program. Although the nature and extent of the ... [problem] ... had long been recognized, the maps depicting the results of the analysis reinforced this recognition and communicated the extent and severity of the problem."

Raw

Raw is the easiest and most difficult diet. Balancing acid/alkaline, fiber and oil...really you're using your body to burn nutrients rather than letting others burn/cook for you. All foods are drugs; plants have pronounced effects (like melons, celery, and grapefruit to name a few). Sometimes I eat meat just to avoid the pharmacology of plants. But even meat has hormones and emotions. It is impossible to get tired of eating raw food because it is inherently healthy. Cooking food is an attempt to trick our bodies to keep eating food that isn't good for us. That's why we get tired of various cooked food, and try to cook in a new way that we aren't tired of yet...

There is a lot that goes into the construction of the quotation marks around "raw food". Lots of thought. Maybe that's why I like it? But also simplicity. I explain it now to neophytes as just trying to get the freshest food I can -- there are no lines in the sand.

Animals


Lasso, hold the rump off the ground so it can't kick, tie up the feet, hold the forelegs, and cut the carotid artery. Don't cut the windpipe or esophagus. Let it bleed. Be sure to save the blood. Then cut the skin around the ankles. and around the anus and "punch" it down, peeling it off. Cut off the head and take out the internal organs. Wash out intestines, stuff with blood. Heart is good raw. Kidneys and liver, but NOT the gall bladder (greenish sac attached to liver). Lungs. Hang for a couple days. The right wine can cut the gamey taste of mutton.

For example, Rancho Rossa, the 06 Sauvignon Blanc (my usual) from Sonoita, Arizona. Arizona Wine Country, where even the clouds are tinted grape, and the rolling red hills fall away to mountains ringed all about, as concentric circles of waves in a pond...this white is dry, tangy, lots of peach and a good kick makes it a tangy arizona specialty. A little something special hidden up cactus country's skirts.

And Olive Oils?
Spectrum's tangle of fruity aromas and slightly nutty flavors is followed by a smooth serene finish reminiscent of Napa Valley Naturals' and Bionaturae's Mediterranean. For a stronger kick, try Lucini Italia Organic Estate Grown (recommend by Dr. Andrew Weil) green and full with a distinct peppery finish and notes of artichoke....
